FireKeepers Casino Hotel - Battle Creek, MI SCOPE OF POSITION: Responsible for supervising the staff and activities of the Sportsbook and online sports/casino gaming application on assigned shifts while ensuring the highest level of guest satisfaction.
More than 5,000 have already applied online for 1,500 positions, and Jeff LaFrance, marketing manager for FireKeepers, said casino officials expect to receive about 20,000 total applications.Still, more than 200 Jackson-area workers lined up Thursday morning at the Jackson South Central Michigan Works service center, seeking jobs at the casino that is expected to open near Battle Creek this summer. Similar job fairs for the casino took place in Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo on Thursday.
'It's going to be a competitive process,' LaFrance said.
The applications being filed online at the downtown service center are the same ones people can access from a home computer, but LaFrance said the casino partnered with Michigan Works to improve access for those who don't have ready access to the Internet.
Once the application was filed, job seekers then set up a time and date for a pre-screening interview that will take place at the casino's office in Marshall.
There are 140 types of positions at the casino, ranging from kitchen staff and bartenders to accounting and management positions. Pay ranges from minimum wage, $7.40 an hour, to $18 an hour, and benefits include medical, dental, vision and life insurance, LaFrance said.
'We're looking for a variety of skill sets,' he said.
Clarence Smith of Jackson was hoping to land a job as a machine repairman. He lost his job when Edscha moved its Jackson operations to Mexico in spring 2007. He found work doing construction, but because business was slow, he was laid off after a few months.
He said he wouldn't mind the drive each day to Battle Creek.
'Anything is better than nothing,' he said.
Because the casino will be owned by the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi Indians, there is a hiring preference for Native Americans.
And because it is a casino job, there is a full background check, and a prior felony is a disqualifier for any position at the casino.
LaFrance said the casion is looking for energetic people, and experience at a casino is preferred, but not required.
'Any skills they have could be transferable to the casino,' he said. 'It's a vibrant industry with a lot of opportunities.'

Jodi and Keith Coleman of Hillsdale arrived early Thursday and had been waiting in line for about two hours as they inched closer to the room filled with a dozen computers.
Keith Coleman said he would have preferred to fill out an application by hand, because the computer system kept going down, causing delays.
'They have so many people applying on the casino Web site that it keeps crashing,' he said. 'They told me we could go home and apply online, but if their Web site is down, what good will it do?'
